What is the difference between acrylic glass and regular glass?

2023-09-26

Glass is divided into organic and inorganic, and the most common type is ordinary inorganic glass. And organic glass(plexiglass), also known as acrylic, looks very similar to regular glass in appearance. For example, when a transparent piece of organic glass is placed together with regular glass, many people may not be able to distinguish it clearly.

1. High transparency

Organic glass (plexiglass)is currently the most excellent polymer transparent material, with a transmittance of 92%, which is higher than that of glass. The tube of a sun lamp called an artificial little sun is made of quartz, because quartz can completely penetrate ultraviolet light. Ordinary glass can only penetrate 0.6% of ultraviolet radiation, but organic glass can penetrate 73%.

2. High mechanical strength

The relative molecular weight of organic glass is about 2 million, and it is a long chain polymer compound. Moreover, the chains that form the molecules are very soft. Therefore, the strength of organic glass is relatively high, and its tensile and impact resistance is 7-18 times higher than that of ordinary glass. There is a type of organic glass that has been heated and stretched, in which the molecular chain segments are arranged in a very orderly manner, significantly improving the toughness of the material. Nail this type of organic glass into it, and even if the nail penetrates, there will be no cracks on the organic glass.

This type of organic glass will also not break into pieces after being penetrated by bullets. Therefore, stretched organic glass can be used as bulletproof glass and also as a cockpit cover on military aircraft.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of acrylic glass

1. Acrylic board has excellent weather resistance, high surface hardness and gloss, as well as good high-temperature performance.

2. Acrylic plates have good processing performance, which can be either hot formed or mechanically processed.

3. Transparent acrylic panels have comparable transmittance to glass, but their density is only half that of glass. In addition, it is not as fragile as glass, and even if damaged, it will not form sharp fragments like glass.

4. The wear resistance of acrylic board is similar to that of aluminum material, with good stability and resistance to various chemical corrosion.

5. Acrylic boards have good printability and spray resistance, and using appropriate printing and spray processes can give acrylic products ideal surface decoration effects.

6. Flammability: Non self  igniting but flammable, not self extinguishing.
